Former national women’s team coach Dan Evumena has said that Edwin Okon
failed to live up to his vow to reach the final of the FIFA World Cup
in Canada because of arrogance and immaturity on the job.
Evumena regarded as one of the best coaches in women’s football told sports journalists that the appointment of Okon as Super Falcons coach was
not done on merit as the Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt handler was
picked because he had a relationship with a very influential member of
the past NFF board.
"Okon has barely been on the job for five years when he was given the
U-20 job which saw him leading the team to the last four after Nigeria
lost in the final in previous tournament. And I thought he was not ripe
to coach the Super Falcons but the NFF asked him to move to move to the
team after Kadiri Ikhana was fired,” he said.
"After winning the African Women’s Championship, Okon became swollen
headed and felt he has done an impossible thing. Then arrogance set in
and he challenged whoever criticised his methods and was demanding to be
treated like the Super Eagles coaches. My brother that was why he
failed in Canada" the former Delta Queens coach stated.
